Principal?Äôs Newsletter – September 17, 2007
For those of us who sometimes wonder what many of our students do after school, last weekend was a perfect example of what so many are routinely doing. Friday night witnessed field hockey history with our girls extending their record to 4-1 with a most impressive victory over Windsor. After that game, the football team had a dominant performance on the LaPlaca Field to even their Division II record to 1-1. Mr. Lenox had his band students on our new bleachers playing during the game, with the cheerleaders helping root our boys on to victory. Saturday the boys?Äô cross-country team ran their way to the top during a multi-divisional tournament to move their record to 2-1. The only defeat from the weekend was one that, truth be told, was likely suspected. Our boys?Äô soccer squad has been playing marvelously well, but was overmatched with DI powerhouse Rutland. They too still have an overall winning record at 3-2. As I have been fortunate to see all our teams play, the area that I, and others in our community, should be most proud of is the manner of which our student-athletes conduct themselves. Win or lose I have seen our teams support each other and graciously deal with the opposition. I have also seen our Activities Coordinator Eric Ramey well prepared for each home contest by meeting and greeting both officials and visiting teams and helping watch over the contests. Now, to the news?Ķ
VSAC Peer Tutoring is available again this year at FHUHS. This is a voluntary and free program that allows students who need assistance to access student tutors during study hall or after school in the After School Homework Success Program. VSAC Peer Tutors Samantha Price, Alanna Flynn, and Josh Jakab attended a two-day conference in Montpelier (9/14-9/15) on developing tutoring skills and strategies. This included one day of combined workshops with college students from UVM and VTC. Sam, Alanna, and Josh were wonderful ambassadors for FHUHS and did a fantastic job. VSAC Peer Tutoring is a free opportunity for students in need of academic support to work with experienced and trained student tutors. Please contact Jess DeCarolis if your son/daughter is interested in either being a tutor or being tutored.

I know our school will be looking terrific well before Slaterbration as our new Beautification Committee is already at work. Mr. Mark Cassidy and Mr. Dick Steele planted brilliantly colored mums along the front of our building. Rachel Schneider and Carly Schneider will be overseeing the cafeteria and lobby transformation, as well as planning for the school-wide student murals that we hope to have underway by November.
The upcoming Eastern States Exposition (Big E) in Springfield, MA will be the staging ground for many at FHU. Lindsy Danforth and Dan Ellis will be competing for Vermont in the 4H horse competitions. Lindsy will also be competing for Vermont in the Public Speaking Presentation during not only the October Big E, but also at the Nationals held in November. Best of luck and skill to these two talented teenagers! Also on display at the Big E will be the FHUHS Marching Band. Under the Direction of Senior Drum Major Carly Schnieder, our students will march in the Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, the 22nd.
Mr. Michael Lenox would also like everyone to know that ?Äúon Oct. 5th, Sandip Burman , a native of Durgapur, India, will perform an hour-long Tabla recital and master class for the FHUHS Band at 8:30 AM in the FHUHS Band Room. Sandip Burman has played the Tabla with various artists such as Ravi Shankar and Bela Fleck and the Flectones. Any questions, please contact Mr. Lenox at ext. 222.
I will let Mrs. Suellen Schneider, FHU Drama Advisor, speak to the September 28th, 7:00 p.m. Murder Mystery Fundraiser. ?ÄúAnyone who thinks themselves a budding Sherlock Holmes will thoroughly enjoy trying to catch the murderer of millionaire James Lansing, at the beautiful Marble Mansion Bed and Breakfast on the Green in Fair Haven. The murder mystery fundraiser ?ÄòDeadly Deal?Äô will be performed by FHU?Äôs Drama Club. Desert is included in the $15 admission?Äù. For tickets, please call the FHUHS office at 265-4966, or feel free to stop on by. Seating is limited, so if you want to help Detective Lt. Paris, played by FHU senior Emily Rampone, catch the murderer, give us a call. Great and plentiful thanks to the Marble Mansion for hosting what looks to be an exciting evening.
One of our Class of 2002 graduates and former yearbook editor has made the big time. Cricket Demasi is presently the Music Clearance Coordinator for NBC?Äôs new hit TV show, ?ÄúThe Singing Bee.?Äù In addition to this, Cricket did her internship for Emerson College for a company owned by none other than Tom Hanks. She has met several celebrities and just loves living on the West Coast. You can see her name listed at the end of the show in the credits. How wonderful to have one of our own accomplish so much in such little time.
This year is the 50th year celebration of the Fair Haven Union High School building. In honor of this milestone, we would like to do something special this year. If you are a past graduate and have any ideas, please pass them on to Diane Flood, Administrative Assistant, Ext. 202, or email her at floodd@fhuhs.org.
Last, but absolutely not least, my thanks to the FHU faculty who have shown in the past three weeks great dedication to our students and the school. By the end of this month, all faculty will have at least started our new Curriculum Mapping initiative, worked on the Program of Studies, assisted in a variety of school-related functions and found time to teach six classes! The part that really exemplifies their dedication to our school has been the large number of faculty and staff who stay to watch our kids compete in after-school events, as well as with Friday night and Saturday competitions. Their time, effort and expertise in the classroom have not gone unnoticed.
Thanks for taking in interest in our school.
Brett C. Blanchard, Fair Haven Union High School Principal
