I hope the Thanksgiving break offered the opportunity to gather with friends and family and appreciate the time spent with them. Prior to the break, Fair Haven Union High School held its first Academic Awards Ceremony. While many of our students are excelling, we want to remind those desiring improvement or extra help that FHU has several programs for academic assistance. Along with the assistance programs, our faculty has been great with offering after school help.

Mrs. Burlette reports that the After School Library Services and Homework Success Program are alive and well. We served a total of 561 students during the first marking period and want to see this number continue to grow. Many of these students were repeats as a result of discovering the value and benefit of this safe and comfortable academic environment.

FHUHS students also enjoy the opportunity of accessing the Castleton State College Upward Bound program and VSAC college and high school student tutors on certain days during our after school library hours. For more information on these services, please visit our school web site:

and the CSC web site

If there are any students having trouble managing their time, we encourage them to join us after school for any amount of time they can spare. We believe they will experience the success of work accomplishment as well as raising grade averages. We invite them to come and check us out.

On November 14th, students from Stafford Technical Center’s Hospitality and Entrepreneurship Management Program and the International Business Program supported the Salvation Army on Wales Street by helping to organize the food donated through the community Stuff-A-Bus program. Over 21,000 pounds of food were donated this year. The students, along with other community volunteers, helped to organize the food, which will be distributed to local residents for Thanksgiving. This is the 7th consecutive year that the Hospitality students have helped to organization the Stuff-A-Bus baskets. Our students who participated in this community service event included Michelle Rheaume, Charlene Ruane and Kelsey Ryan.

Students from the three Family & Consumer Science Foods Classes competed for the title of “Best Apple Pie Makers” on Friday, November 15. Teachers and staff were the taste-testers and voted by donating a dollar to the pie they liked the best.

Many commented on the quality of all the pies. It was difficult to choose just one! Second place winners were from the period 8 class: Shawna Lamb, Charles Brooks, and Kerry Johnson. First place honors went to the period 1 group: David Ball, Ginny Durfee, and April Kersavage. Forty-four dollars was raised for Fair Haven Concerned. APPLE PIE CONTEST WINNERS:

  • First Place – RED / Period 1 (David Ball, Ginny Durfee, April Kersavage)
  • Second Place – BLUE / Period 8 (Shawna Lamb, Charles Brooks, Kery Johnson)

The FHUHS Booster Club will be holding an organizational meeting on
Thursday, November 29 at 7:00 pm at the High School. This organizational
meeting is open to all interested community members. The purpose of this
meeting is to elect officers and discuss plans for the future.
Contact Jack or Sharon Adams @ 265-4975 with any questions.

FHU alumni Ben Hahn earned his first MVP award, after being the Spartans’ do-it-all man for most of the season. Hahn saw action at nearly every position on the field as he helped the Spartans to a berth in the NCAA National Tournament. Hahn played in all 22 games, assisting on a pair of goals and earning a spot on the All-NAC First Team.

The prestigious International Thespian Society announced their annual awards. FHU is extremely proud to present the following students nominated for membership: Rachel Schneider, Carly Schneider, Stephanie Santini, Matthew Couture, Ethan Grey, Coty Barber and Stephanie Traverse. There are two beautiful plaques on display in the lobby signifying their accomplishment. Some of these talented student thespians will be seen in the FHU Drama production of Bus Stop. I have included the press release for the show for more information.

On Friday, November 30th, the Fair Haven Union High School Drama Club presents the uproarious 1955 comedy “BUS STOP” by William Inge in the FHUHS band room. The stage will be set in a cheerful, yet dingy roadside diner that also serves as the rest stop for the occasional bus lines in the area. In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub singer, is the passenger with most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to, and finally kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy named Bo, with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. The belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she is ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, “Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana…” As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the café and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own: a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the café also gets her first taste of romance.

The romantic leads of Cherie and Bo are being played by seniors Rachel Schneider and Ethan Grey. The part of Grace the diner owner is being played by Carly Schneider, also a senior. The cast also includes Sam Lucci, Sophia Michael , Christian Doran, Matt Couture, and Tyler Grey.

The play is being co-directed by Suellen Schneider, Drama Advisor, Summers Eatmon, Senior Directing major at Castleton State College, and Student Director, Emily Rampone, senior at FHUHS. “We invite the community to come and see this fabulous comedy with our cast of five males and three women”, said Emily Rampone,” I was thrilled to direct such a hilarious play but it was hard not to start laughing and lose all train of thought”. Some people may remember Marilyn Monroe in the 1956 movie “BUS STOP” based on Inge’s play.

The play will be performed three times in the FHUHS band room Friday, Nov. 30th and Saturday, Dec. 1st at 8pm, and Sunday, Dec. 2nd matinee at 2pm. Tickets can be bought at the door for $6, students and seniors $4. For more information, call FHUHS at (802)(265-4966).

I look forward to seeing you at the play.
