As you many of you have seen on the home page of the school website (http://fhuhs.org), David Herren has been asking student and faculty photographers and artists to send him their work to put on our home page. There are a few things there now, but he just received a most interesting message from a former exchange student. I agreed with Mr. Herren that it is worth putting in my newsletter.

Hello,

My name is Vania Couto. I was an exchange student from Brazil at FHUHS in 1986. I had the most important year of my life there. I would love to send some of my photographies from Brazil to be at the website.

I would like to know if I can participate too.

Thanks a lot,
Vania Couto

Mr. Herren responded and told her he would be delighted to have some of her images for the rotation. Vania’s reply:

David,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

I can’t believe I am talking to someone from the FHUHS. I went to the Stannard and Gammon’s family on January 1986. I was a Rotary Exchange Student. I went to the senior year when I got there and in August 1987 I continued in the senior year.

I had the best time of my life there. I learned all the best that I have in my heart and in my mind with my host family and with my friends and teachers from Fair Haven. I didn’t have a chance to go back there. But I still talk to some of my friends there such as Jennifer Book, Jon Wright, etc. We had our 20th reunion this year but I didn’t have enough money to go to the USA. My host parents are not there anymore.

I am really happy to talk to someone from my unforgettable school. I didn’t have a chance to say THANKS FHUHS FOR ALL YOU MADE FOR MY HAPPINESS and it is an incredible chance to do it.

Thank again for this excellent opportunity to be there somehow. I would love to hug and to thank everyone there.

Vania Couto

PS: I will send my pictures for you and I will write about them too.

Vania’s photos (after they are sent, of course), as well as some from students and staff at FHU, may be seen on our web page.

Mr. Chuck Connelly has been keeping me updated on a terrific educational project that has been ongoing much of this semester. The students in Mr. Ben Worthing’s class have been working with global positioning systems (GPS), satellite photographs and using good ol’ fashioned scientific legwork to produce an interesting and very visual project. Mr. Connelly reports that: “We’ve just wrapped up our school mapping/tree inventory project before the snow hit. Wanted to share some of the data the kids collected and the maps they built with the help of Steve Schild from the Rutland Planning Commission. We built into the project both skill building with the GPS units and creating GIS maps for the school. After the break we’re committed to doing a presentation of some kind to colleagues in the social studies and science departments. We’re also looking to present at the Dynamic Landscapes conference in Burlington in May. Thanks for the support and assistance. Ben and I think the kids both liked and learned from this project.”

Fundraising continues to move forward for the FHUHS Outdoor Bleacher Project Phase II. Their goal is $ 35,000 to purchase a set of Hydraulic Movable Bleachers that will seat 200 fans. The mobility of these bleachers will allow them to be placed on any Athletic field for the event occurring that day

Throughout the Basketball season, donation boxes will continue to be placed at both the Ticket and Concession Booths.

Phase One, which began in June 2002, is complete. Engraved donation name plaques have been installed on each of the bleacher rows. The Commemorative Wall of names has been installed as well.

Currently, the committee has raised $ 9,500.00 for Phase II. Donations can be mailed to FHUHS Outdoor Bleacher Project Phase II. Project Secretary Fran LaPlaca (ext. 254) would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

The FHUHS Music Department will present its Winter Instrumental Concert on Wednesday, December 19th, in the FHUHS Band Room at 7:30 PM. The concert will feature the FHUHS Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Rock Ensemble. A special congratulation goes to Reggie Schulman and Christina Papendrea for making the New England Music Festival’s Concert Band.

FHUHS Drama and Music Department will be having auditions for this spring’s musical, Nunsense, which will be performed at the Paramount Theatre in March. The auditions will be held in the FHUHS Music Wing after school on Thursday the 20th. Interested students should see Mr. Lenox and sign up at the Drama Bulletin Board.

The FHU voice mail system will be updated from December 22nd through the 27th. This means that the phones should work fine but will not receive voice messages. Sorry for any possible inconvenience.
