On behalf of the Fair Haven Union High School community I would like to give acknowledgement and praise to former Industrial Arts instructor Joe Watkins and his Technology and Action students who built the hybrid car that was recently donated to Stafford Technical Center’s Power Tech program. Mr. Watkins’ class was able to build a real working car with students working only 40 minutes a day! Mrs. Birchmore informed me that the 2008 graduating class is the last of the students that worked on it.

As it is great to have solid data on how and what we are doing at FHU, Mrs. Burlette wanted to report that we had a total of 661 students who attended, after school, the Homework Success Program and/or library services during the 3rd marking period. That’s a total of 1946 thus far this year. With many students staying until 5:00 p.m., it makes for a long school day for many (including Mrs. Burlette) but has proven to be highly educationally valuable.

Junior John Murray won a Gold Medal at the State Science Fair for his wind tunnel experiments. He and a teacher were invited to an Engineering Conference in Texas. Freshman, Wyatt Traverse won a silver medal for his experiments on heat generated by agricultural feeds. All of the Fair Haven students had a good time and did very well. John plans on traveling to Texas to present his experiment, and we look forward to hearing of his adventure upon his return.

Fair Haven Union High School is trying to form a team of people for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Rutland County. The event will be held Saturday, June 21, at 1:00 p.m., and run through Sunday, June 22, at 8:00 a.m. If anyone in the community would be interested in participating in this worthwhile event, or would like to sponsor our team, please contact Diane Flood at 265-4966, Ext. 202, or you can e-mail her at floodd@fhuhs.org

Congratulations again to Ashley Brown who, along with her parents and grandmother, signed her letter of intent to attend the University of Vermont on a track and field scholarship. It was a thrill to see our local papers attend her signing in the FHU lobby, and appreciate not only Mr. Ramey for organizing, but Coach Heitkamp for making the time, as he always seems to, in support of one of our students who has earned a rare accomplishment.

Several FHUHS Band students heard the Carla Bley Trio play at the Flynn last Saturday, April 19th. Carla Bley is a jazz pianist and composer with a highly original voice. She was joined by the great jazz bassist Steve Swallow and sax man Andy Sheppard in this rare trio setting. The UVM Jazz Ensemble opened the concert showcasing Bley’s innovative big-band music. Thanks to Mr. Lenox for organizing and arranging this experience for our students.

I can not remember six days of such amazingly beautiful weather this early, so hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy some of it. I know our student athletes have been.

Brett C. Blanchard, Fair Haven Union High School Principal
