We are (nearly) officially back at it at FHU with Freshmen Orientation Tuesday the 26th, and everyone here the following day. The relative quietness of the summer was thankfully broken two weeks ago when over 150 student-athletes took to the fields for the first practices of the 2008-09 school year. The faculty and staff have been terrific at preparing for the arrival of students, with everyone spending time taking classes, preparing new units of study and/or work on curriculum. The building and grounds look fantastic with several significant improvements.

During Wednesday’s morning assembly we will be giving recognition to the individuals/ organizations that assisted in seeing several of our projects come to fruition. FHU is incredibly proud to boast of having the finest track in the state. With a newly rubberized eight-lane NCAA lined track, our students will be competing and training on the best surface possible. The track will also be open for community use during non-student use times. We will be having an official track opening at the start of the track and field season. Fran LaPlaca’s Bleacher Committee will also be recognized for their efforts to see a portable 285 seat bleacher become a reality. Certainly the Track Committee will be excited to see this amazing hydraulic system in place to better honor the efforts of our students. And, as those having visited the school over the past month will confirm, our new Fair Haven Union High School welcome sign completed in memory of Seth Hubbard is amazing. The huge slate sign with custom support towers also of slate was completed by Norm Lord with material donated by Charlie Brown. The motivating force, complete with funds to support it, was from the FHU Class of 2003. All of these accomplishments physically display the incredible community support, talent and caring that is part of Fair Haven Union High School. It was a real joy to see employees of General Electric donating their time to help on the track. It is usually our students who seek out community service, so loved seeing all of them (in the rain) digging and constructing our long jump pits! I am still in awe of all that resulted when our greater community put their efforts forth on behalf of our students.

Mr. Doucette received a letter of appreciation from the Make-A- Wish Foundation for the Class of 2008’s generous donation of $924.83.

Varsity Magazine included Sam Macomber and Andrew Patch in their list of all-state baseball stars for 2008. Ashley Brown was awarded the #1 impressive track and field performance for 2008 due to her accomplishments in the 100m/100 hurdles/long jump.

There will be much more news in next week’s letter, but wanted to welcome everyone back, give open thanks to our supportive communities and prepare everyone again for trying to get through my newsletter (which is why I have kept this short). I am excited to have our students back inside their building. I also look forward to seeing many of you this fall and invite you in to meet with me over any student-centered initiative you may have.
