Slaterbration is all this week with home games every day. Starting off today with pajama day has been interesting, especially the large number of students wearing their (appropriate) outfits to display school pride. I, alas, have to beg off as do have meetings, a community gathering later and great reluctance for starters. I am confident that community turnout for our extracurricular events will be large with Friday’s football game on LaPlaca Field seeing an overflow from our 600+ seat bleachers.
Last week’s phone conference with Senator Sanders was a success for our Student Council, as well as for the Senator (if I may be so bold). Although we were the first school to have our closed circuit network ready for the conference, one school was unable to make the connection so the default phone conference was put to good use. Senior Matt Couture spoke on behalf of the entire Student Council present. His question of “How does [Senator Sanders] see funding for higher education in the future? Should there be college opportunity for all?†was greeted with great interest and provided an opportunity to discuss the role of the government overall. The hour-long question-and-answer session was interesting, informative; and I am proud to say FHU was the only school to have representatives from each class in attendance. Student Council Advisor, Mr. Hurley Cavacas, will be emailing the Senator’s staff our student’s reflections of the phone conference. Regardless of individual political preference, this is a good example of democracy in action.
Over the next few weeks at least 17 colleges will be sending representatives to meet with our juniors and seniors who sign up in Guidance for an appointment. Please feel free to contact FHU Guidance for further information at 265-3636.
This past week senior Dan Ellis and sophomore Julia Dockum attended the Eastern States Exposition as delegates representing the University of Vermont 4-H program for the state of Vermont. I hope to hear more details about their important roles when next we speak.
Sophomore Wyatt Traverse is also attending Eastern States this week as a competitor in the National Ayrshire Show, junior and open. Best of luck Wyatt!
This week will see senior Samantha Young going to a revival in Orlando, Florida, with her church group. She will be attending training sessions for mission trips outside of the country. Samantha is also an outstanding vocalist, and the community should look forward to hearing her solo at the next FHU Chorus concert.
Best of luck to the fifteen students representing FHU at the first Scholar’s Bowl competition in Essex this Saturday. Anyone willing to be a reader for the contest should contact Coach Ollie Allen at 265-4966.
Enjoy the beautiful weather ordered for this week.
