Mrs. McCuen’s students will be in a poetry performance workshop on Tuesday, November 25th. In this workshop, they have the opportunity to be coached by a Vermont slam poet in preparation for the national recitation contest. Last year’s contest showcased some of the incredible student talent with both writing and spoken performance. Good luck (and have fun) to Jon Murray, Matthew Couture, Adam Cecil, Kelsey Burhans, Louis Chamberlain, Sophia Michael, Emily Turgeon, Gwynneth Roberts, Robert Bowen and Courtney Hill.

The following students will be attending the Governors Youth Leadership Conference in Burlington on Monday November 24th, all day: Sean Vincent, Shawn Mason, Nicole Bishop Ashley Butrimas, Kyle Hibbard.

How about joining us after school from 4:00– 5:00 p.m on various Wednesdays in the FHUHS Library for our Book Talk Session? Why not bring a friend! Check out the Library page Coming Soon on our FHUHS web site to learn more about this. http://fhuhs.org/departments/library/coming-soon/

FHU would like to give many thanks to the Fair Haven Travel Center and their continued support and commitment to education in their community. Once again, the Travel Center has provided $500.00 to Fair Haven Union High School to be used for the betterment of their students. Last year these funds were used for a student laptop computer.

Upon receiving the Exxon/Mobil Grant, I commented on how nice it was to have funds that have already not been specifically earmarked for another purpose. Fair Haven Union High School greatly appreciates the gift that the Travel Center has provided, but is even more appreciative of their commitment to the kids in the community. I would also like to thank Mr. Paul Eaton for continuing to make this connection on behalf of the students at FHU.

The Community Service Club will be collecting hats, mittens and scarves for our Community Sharing Tree, to help the children in our community keep warm this winter. Donations will be accepted starting December 1st through December 18th at FHUHS. Their goal is to collect 100 pairs of mittens. We will accept old (clean) and new. Please help us out, remembering those who are less fortunate when you are out holiday shopping. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Carini @ 265-4966 ext 223, or Mrs. Ransom @ 265-4966 ext 267.

On November 18th, students from Stafford Technical Center’s Hospitality and Entrepreneurship Management Program supported the Salvation Army on Wales Street by helping to organize the food donated through the community Stuff-A-Bus program. The students, along with other community volunteers, helped to organize the food which will be distributed to local residents for Thanksgiving. This is the 8th consecutive year that the Hospitality students have helped to organize the Stuff-A-Bus baskets. Christian Doran represented (extraordinarily well, I am sure) Fair Haven Union High School.

Similar to the fall, the Booster Club will be hosting a Winter Tip-off on Tuesday, December 2nd, from 6pm-7:30pm for parents and student-athletes to meet with the coaching staffs. The Boosters will be providing pizza and a drink prior to team meetings, where coaches will explain the expectations of the season for everyone, and answer any questions parents have at that time. The fall kick-off was a success and we look forward to seeing many of you there.

Fair Haven Union High School is offering a reduced price Winter Sports Pass. This pass will admit you to all regular season home events during the winter season, with the exception of the Booster Club Holiday Basketball Tournament. Prices are $35 for adults, $20 for students and $15 for Sr. Citizens (age 55 and older). Please contact Joyce Roberts @ 265-3808, or Eric Ramey @ 265-2047 or eramey@fhuhs.org to purchase your ticket.

The Marble Valley League has announced that Fair Haven has received the Sportsmanship Award for both Girl’s Soccer and Field Hockey. This is the second consecutive year for the soccer team, and despite going winless this fall, the field hockey team’s “never say die” attitude was recognized by the other MVL coaches. Both teams return many players in 2009, and we know each will continue to make us proud both on and off the field.

The American Legion is sponsoring an oratorical competition for grades 9 through 12 with thousands of dollars in scholarship money up for grabs. If you are interested, please see Mr. Allen, the Scholars Bowl coach, for details.

I hope everyone has a holiday for which to be thankful,

Brett C. Blanchard, Fair Haven Union High School Principal

Fair Haven Union High School, in partnership with the community, will promote in all students the knowledge and skills necessary to become independent thinkers, effective communicators, and responsible, productive citizens in the global community.
