The Community Service Club, under the leadership of Ms. Beth Carini and Mrs. Kim Ransom, has done a wonderful job with the Community Sharing Tree and collected a total of over 106 sets of mittens, scarves and hats. We will be making donations to Fair Haven Concerned, Women’s Shelter of Rutland County and local families in the Fair Haven area. A big thank you to students, faculty, staff and parents for all the donations.
Fair Haven Union High School would like to recognize our neighbors Gisela and Werner Baumann for their assistance during last weeks (first) snow storm. Mr. Baumann saw some of our students and faculty shoveling, so he brought his snow blower by and did our sidewalk. When Mr. Chuck Connolly was out shoveling the drive later, he plowed a parking spot for us! Mrs. Gina Hines tells me they are very friendly and engaging with our students. The plowing, however, was above and beyond! Thank you.
Stafford Tech reported that from November 3, 2008 to December 12, 2008, U.S. Department of the Treasury’s fall 2008 National Financial Literacy Challenge was taken by more than 75,000 high school students. Participants included students in rural areas, suburbs, and cities in this country, and in Department of Defense schools around the world. Christian Doran scored in the top 25th percentile of the nation’s scores. Congratulations to Christian.
On December 17 th, the FHU Scholars Bowl team attended the second round of regional play at Champlain Valley Union HS. Matt Couture set a new personal record at this tournament, scoring 250 points in three games and leading the team to victory over Mt. Abe, with strong support from Adam Cecil, Sophia Michael, Mitchell Dundon and Dakota Folmsbee. The win was our first regional win since Mr. Allen became their coach. We look forward to seeing more successes from this talented group of students.
The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team is off to a great start at 3-0, and will be hosting the 6th Annual Mary Canfield Holiday Tournament on December 29th & 30th. The Slaters will open with Mt. Abraham, and then play either Otter Valley or Burr & Burton on day two. The tournament will boast some strong competition as the four teams involved have a combined 14-1 record as of this writing. All proceeds will go to the FHU Booster Club, which in turn, will go right back to our kids. Hope everyone can come out and support the Slaters!
The Boys Basketball teams will be competing once again in the Whitehall Holiday Tournament just across the border. The varsity portion of the tourney will be held on Dec. 26th & 27th, with the JV piece on the 29th & 30th.
The wrestling team has been busy with tournaments, and several guys are off to incredible starts. Justin Felion, Joe Durfee, Seth Welch and Kale Auger are all 7-1 through the early part of the season. They will be hosting the Slater Duals on Saturday Jan. 3rd @ FHU at 9 a.m. Several other schools from throughout the area will be here as well, and we hope people will take a moment to stop in and see how hard these athletes work.
The Indoor Track team has been doing well in their early meets, as many veterans, and some newcomers, are making impressions already. Coach Heitkamp is still in the “feeling out” stages with this team as he gets as many athletes as he can qualified for the State meet, but after being ranked 4th in the pre-season poll, be ready for the Slaters to surprise the experts in February!
The cheerleaders have been hard at work preparing for games, but will soon begin to get ready for their competitions. They are a very dedicated group of athletes, and we appreciate all their efforts during this season.
On December 10 th, students, family members, and FHUHS Staff members, 39 in all, ventured to New York City to see Arthur Miller’s play, All My Sons. Most of the students had studied the play in Voices of War, a junior and senior English elective. Starring John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, Katie Holmes, and Patrick Wilson, this production of All My Sons has been a huge critical and financial success. The members of our group were enthusiastic about it as well. Naturally, Fair Haven students are delightful travel companions and sophisticated appreciators of theater. All in all, it was a wonderful day, which would not have been possible without the generosity of those who supported the project by purchasing student tickets. Sincere thanks to everyone involved, and great appreciation to Mrs. Hadeka for arranging and working on this student-initiated educational trip.
Happy Holidays and enjoy the snow as it looks like it may be here for awhile,
Brett C. Blanchard, Fair Haven Union High School Principal
