FHU’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Vermont Teen Leadership Program (VTLSP) groups, led by Deputy Elrick, sent Kyle Hibbard, Jessica Wood and Amber Young to a Tobacco conference in Fairlee, Vermont. They all gained information that they brought back to FHUHS and will share with our school. The first activity that they will do is to go around to area video stores and place stickers on movie rentals that say “there is a good chance the movie you are about to see has smoking in it.” The reason? Tobacco shows up in nearly 4 out of 5 movies. Stay tuned for information on the next SADD/VTLSP activity.
Five Early Field Experience students from Green Mountain College are at Fair Haven Union High School for the second semester. Students Brittany Correia, Alexa Diaz, and Charles Harcourt will be working with Social Studies teachers Ms. Beth Carini and Mrs. Sandy Kuehn. Josh Saxe will be observing our Science teachers. Thus far I have heard nothing but accolades for these GMC students, and I personally was impressed when they stopped by my office.
Five FACT Civics/World Geography students have been selected to go to the State House in Montpelier with Mrs. Kuehn to hear testimony about efforts to protect the natural environment of Lake Champlain. Congratulations to freshmen Catherine Baumgartner, Kaci O’Rourke, Mindy Jurgen, Kaylie-Ann Flannigan, Celina Bronson, and Zak Harvey as the alternate, for being selected to attend this function. Watch this space for a report on their experience!
The freshmen class of 2012 will be hosting the Valentine’s Day Dance Saturday, February 14th, from 7 to 10 p.m. This will be a great fundraiser for the kids, as well as a good way to spend a Saturday night.
Mrs. Birchmore’s Horticulture students are making/selling floral bouquets for Valentine’s Day this week. It is especially nice to see some flowers locally (FHUHS) grown this time of year.
I would encourage every parent and student to regularly check in with our Guidance website. Some of their valuable links include: - 08-09 Test Dates - College Visits - Counseling Links - Freshman News - Test Taking Tips - Junior News - Scholarships - Senior News - Sophomore News
Guidance, just this week, will also be conducting our Academic Awards Ceremony on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.; Medquest 2009 for any one interested in health career exploration; and Planning for College night this Tuesday for parents of students in grades 6-8.
Scholars Bowl news – On Sunday, February 22 nd, the District 3 competition for the American Legion Oratorical semi-finals will be held at Rutland Post 31 at 8:00 am.
