Fair Haven Union High School faculty members awarded Rowland Foundation Grant

FHUHS is excited and proud to announce that 504 Coordinator Jess DeCarolis and School-based Clinician Sarah Kiefer were recently announced as one of the Rowland Foundation Grant recipients for their proposal regarding the newly created FHUHS Learning Annex. The $100,000 grant will afford these two talented educators the opportunity to investigate, plan and work on our new extension of the high school.

The importance of this program can not easily be overstated and we are thrilled that one of the most educationally centered grant foundations has agreed. Ms. DeCarolis and Mrs. Kiefer will have the resources next fall “to audit the current program, to research existing programs and current theory, and to create and implement a structured program.” The Rowland Foundation believes in the sustainability of the Learning Annex and is convinced, as we are at FHUHS, that it will offer a better utilization of increasingly scarce resources while meeting a greater number of individual student needs.

The foundation’s committee, under the leadership of former Burr & Burton Headmaster Chuck Scranton, also believes the FHUHS Learning Annex could serve as a model for other regional educational programs. He, along with the decision making committee, were so impressed with the proposal and the ability of these two educators to move the program to the next level, that they became one of seven funded initiatives out of the forty who applied. The grant allows FHUHS the time, money and future resources to strengthen an already well structured alternative learning program.
