As I am just recently discovering for this school year, many of our faculty/staff spend the summer engaged in amazing educational opportunities that lead to improved classroom instruction and student relations overall. French teacher, Ms. Ashleigh Sanborn, is sure to have such an experience starting soon after graduation. Ashleigh took the initiative to apply for the sole position of Residence Life Director for the Academic Study Associates’ (ASA) French immersion program. After interviewing in Manhattan, the ASA leadership saw what we at FHUHS already know: Ashleigh is an energetic, creative, student-centered educator that speaks French beautifully. This program chooses sixty students from throughout the U.S. to spend the weeks from June 24-July27 studying, traveling and experiencing French language, culture and society. The program is stationed in Nice but travels throughout the country. The students take lessons in the morning, with all instruction being solely in French. Ashleigh will be responsible for training the other adult leaders, as well as coordinating parental contact, organizing tours, and overseeing any health or safety concerns. Ms. Sanborn told me, “It is an exciting opportunity and it will be nice to go back to France [as she studied there in 2002]. I am looking forward to the culture and taking back the experience to my students.”
The freshmen just returned from the Seacoast Science Center for hands-on science and geography. They explored the tidal pools of the New England coast thanks to the efforts of Mr. Cavacas, Mr. Worthing, Ms. Mason, Mrs. Kuehn and others here at FHUHS.
The Rutland Regional Medical Center had a Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on April 22nd. Teen volunteers with hours of service divisible by 100 received a recognition pin. Molly Noble received a pin for her 900 hours of volunteer service at this ceremony. Congratulations Molly!
Thanks to the efforts of Wendy Savery, Deb Hanson and Peg Lucci, FHUHS is proud to announce the following opportunity.

Although he promised he would never do this again, Mr. Everett is thinking about taking another trip to London over April vacation 2010. He is in the early stages of planning, trying to see what interest there is. The trip is open to this year’s freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. As before, parents or guardians are welcome also. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Everett at everettt@fhuhs.org.
FHU will be hosting an Eighth Grade Parent Night on Thursday, May 14th. The purpose of the evening is to familiarize our future students and their parents/guardians with their high school. The administration, faculty and Student Council will be on hand to give an overview of programs and offer a tour of the building. The night will begin in the Fair Haven Union High School band room at 7:00 p.m. After a brief presentation by the school administration, our faculty and coaches/ advisors will meet in a more informal atmosphere in the school gym. Refreshments will be provided, and the tours led by members of our Student Council.
Have a great week,
Brett C. Blanchard, Fair Haven Union High School Principal
