All of us at Fair Haven Union High are proud to announce the recent news that junior Lindsay Brown has been named an EF Educational Tour Global Citizen Scholarship recipient. The official press release from EF Tours informs me that, “Out of hundreds of applicants, Lindsay was one of 10 winners from the U.S. who will travel on a 10-day, expenses paid EF Educational Tour to Europe. The trip departs on June 13th from Washington DC, where Lindsay will meet her fellow scholarship winners before continuing on to Berlin, Prague and Lucerne. EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship encourages high school sophomores and juniors to think about their roles in local and global communities, and how their actions affect the people around them and around the world. The applicants submitted a 1000-word essay to be considered. This year’s EF Global Citizen Award applicants were asked to respond to the prompt, “In our interconnected world, barriers need to be broken in order for communication and global literacy to thrive. Describe how the destruction of the Berlin Wall has led to open communication and cross-cultural experiences. If you are chosen as a global citizen scholarship recipient, how will this trip to Berlin help you to grow as a global citizen and break down language and communication barriers in your own community?” For Lindsay’s winning essay, she wrote about her experience hosting a Chinese exchange student. Lindsay writes: “We would each take away from this experience the knowledge of what it’s like to break down a cultural obstacle and achieve a bond, a friendship, that didn’t seem manageable. This information we will keep with us forever. I believe that having this experience will allow me to better understand how to eliminate cultural barriers that stand in my way.” When asked what she is most looking forward to about this trip, Lindsay says she is really looking forward to seeing all of the European cities on the itinerary. She is really looking forward to seeing where the Berlin Wall use to stand and visiting a school in Berlin. When you see Lindsay, congratulate her and wish her well.

The FHUHS Break-a-Leg Society presents Once Upon a Mattress at the Paramount Theatre on May 15th & 16th at 7:30pm. Adults: $15; Students/Seniors: $10. For tickets, call the Paramount Box Office at 775-0903 or go to paramountlive.org. Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy based on the story of the Princess and the Pea. Join the moat-swimming Princess Winifred as she tries to pass Queen Aggravain’s princess test to win the hand of Prince Dauntless. With a pantomiming king, a damsel in distress, and a colorful cast of characters, this is a great show for thespians of all ages. Hope to see you there!

Ms. Carini and Mrs. Ransom wish to say to everyone who helped with the food donations, “Thank you very much for all the items you donated. We received a total of over 400 items we will be delivering to Fair Haven Concerned today!” Congratulations to Mrs. Hadeka and the students in her TA who collected 116 items.

FHUHS Technology Coordinator Mr. Eric Snay recently received some important donations from Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) representative Scott Mullins (father of Jade). Mr. Snay said, “The trip to VELCO went great and I have to say, the donations were very generous. One of the switches is brand new and never used, and the other two are in great shape. They also gave us a UPS and dozens of patch cables. This is some great equipment that will really help us upgrade our network backbone.” If that does not make sense to you, just trust me when I say VELCO’s donation will greatly help our technology.

Here is the “court” news from the Junior Prom, courtesy of Mr. Ben Worthing, Class Advisor. Blair Demetroules was named King; Megan Irons announced as Queen, with the rest of the court including Molly Noble, Courtney Joyal, Vanessa Rheaume, John Pellerin, Jackson Richards, and Sean Vincent. FHUHS would also like to include special thanks to Stewarts (for drink donations), Matt Couture (for lighting the “Grand March”), and all the parents who helped out.

Congratulations are in order for the newest Peer Mediators. They are: Gwynn Roberts, Samantha Mestyan, Tyler Disorda, Jessica Spaulding and Robert Forkey. These students have gone through an application process to be accepted as Peer Mediators, and their willingness to support their peers and FHUHS is greatly appreciated and deserving of recognition.

We have two music students who will be representing FHUHS at the All State Music Festival in May at Essex High School. The performance date is Saturday, May 9, at 3:00 p.m. Representing FHUHS are Christy Papandrea for Instrumental and Sam Hoenes for Chorus. Best of luck and sound, Christy and Sam.

Have a great week,

Brett C. Blanchard, Fair Haven Union High School Principal
