Congratulations to senior Bonnie Schnabel for being one of the top two Vermont State Finalists in the “Doodle 4 Google” contest. This competition invited K-12 students to design a Google logo around the intriguing theme “What I Wish for the World.”

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND – WORLD (yes WORLD Competition) Winners!!!!
Louis Chamberlain, Randy Ettori, and Jacob Galvin just returned from the Odyssey of the Mind WORLD Finals in Ames, Iowa! Their team won FIRST PLACE for their division – defeating 36 other finalist teams from around the country and the world. In addition, they received a Renatra Fusco award, which is given to teams showing exceptional creativity and risk-taking in problem solving. There were over 800 teams competing at World Finals – and only 6 teams received this award! FHU is extremely proud of their accomplishment.
The FHU track team performed extraordinarily well at the State competition on Saturday.
The girls team won the Division II State Championship. In addition, FHU had the following winners: Boys 4×800 relay (school record & State champs, first ever at FHU) with team members Nick Book, Zach Wilson, Alec Sanderson, Todd Kitchin; Girls 4×100 relay State champs with team members Jenna Charron, Kendra Severance, Emily McIntyre, and Chelsea Montello; and girls 4×400 State champs with Chelsea Murray, Morgan Childs, Kendra Severance, and Shannon Park. Also, there were some individual State champions: Chelsea Montello – 100 meter dash, Shannon Park – 800 meter run and triple jump, Melissa Childs – pole vault (another first at FHU), and Chelsea Murray – javelin (by a dramatic 1” margin). Congratulations to all and to Coach Heitkamp for this outstanding team.
The Slater baseball team travels to Lyndon today in a State semi-final game in Division II. To get to this point, they defeated Bellows Falls 1 – 0 and Harwood 5 – 3. Good luck boys!
Junior Alyssa Dempsey, a Fair Haven Union competitor, succeeded in making it to the final round of UVM’s writing competition. On Wednesday, May 20th, she competed at the college with other top high school students from around the State. Alyssa’s adept ability shone, and she won both the competition and its monetary prize. Congratulations Alyssa!
Parenting class for parents, grandparents, guardians, and anyone with an adolescent in their lives will be starting this fall at FHUHS on Tuesday evenings, beginning September 15th and running for 6 weeks from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the library. The class is free and refreshments will be served. Come to listen and ask your questions. This is a great opportunity for our community!

Diane Flood is organizing a team from the District to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. It is being held at the CVPS facilities building at the corner of Post Road and Route 7 in Rutland Town from 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27th, through 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 28th. If anyone is interested in participating or making a donation, you may contact Diane by e-mail at floodd@fhuhs.org or by contacting her at Fair Haven Union High School, 265-4966, Ext. 202. Luminaries are also available for a donation of $5.00 to honor a survivor or in memory of a loved one. The luminary ceremony will be held Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. Please support this cause, almost everyone has been affected in one way or another.
Last week Deb Haskins, executive director of the Student Assistance Program, spoke to Mr. Merkel’s, Mr. Bruce’s and the Health classes on how drugs affect the brain. It was very well received by all the students.
On May 8th, the Peer Leadership students attended the Peer Leadership Conference along with PHS. We again took home the trophy, 2nd year in a row! Way to go Slaters!
French 3, 4, and 5 students will be taking a field trip to Cafe Provence in Brandon, VT. The purpose of the trip is to experience authentic French cuisine. The trip will be June 8th, and the students are very excited.
French teacher, Ashleigh Sanborn, has been chosen to participate in a World Language – French multi-state standard-setting study to be conducted by ETS, August 10 and 11 in Princeton, NJ. “The purpose of this study is to recommend a passing score for the test, establishing a licensure test requirement.” Ashleigh has been invited to participate in a standard setting study as a panelist. Panelists are selected for their content expertise and experience, and to be representative of diverse professional perspectives. Congratulations Ashleigh, we look forward to hearing your feedback in the fall.
