With formalized testing already being underway with the NECAPs, PSATs and SATs, it was nice to receive some early good news on this topic.
Two Fair Haven Union High School students were recently recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Program as Commended Students. Recognition is based on the students’ performance on the 2008 PSAT/NMSQT. The two students, Adam Cecil and Alyssa Dempsey, will be formally recognized at our end of the marking period assembly in November. A release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation notes:
Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In April following the fall test administration, high-scoring participants from every state are invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by NMSC. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.
In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
The Scholars Bowl team is doing a couple of new things this year. First, they are into their third week of an Internet competition called “Quiz Net.” This allows them the ability to compete against schools from all over the country and never leave the school. On October 12th, they had their best showing when they tied for second place with St. Paul’s Catholic School. There are Internet matches every Monday in Mrs. Cornell’s room from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. So, if you are here at school, come in and cheer them on.
Scholars Bowl will also be participating in a Halloween tournament in Hanover, New Hampshire. They have done this tournament in the past, and it has been a great time. This year it is being limited to 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders. If there are any 7th or 8th graders who may be interested, please let Mr. Allen or one of the team members know.
This year Scholars Bowl has changed their format. Instead of having two regional dates for going to the playoffs, there will be Super Regionals. There will only be one date, and that date will be December 11th. They can bring as many four-person squads as they can field. We wish them the best in this competition.
Congratulations to Madeline Jockell, member of the class of 2010, for displaying her (paintings) art work at Timco Jewlers in Rutland, VT on Saturday, October 17th. It is great to see the talent and accomplishments of our students on display.
Have a great week!
Brett C. Blanchard,
Fair Haven Union High School Principal
