This week kicks off Senior Week for all our athletic teams with LaPlaca Field hosting the pregame recognition. Mr. Cassidy and the maintenance staff will be working hard to see that the field remains in fine enough condition for five games to be held in just over a week. Mr. Ramey will be omnipresent (as he is throughout the year) to see that all goes well; his hard work results in the senior athletes’ hard work getting proper recognition.

The Break-a-Leg Society is presenting “Fair Haven Union High School: After Dark,” a haunted high school event, Thursday, October 22nd & Friday, October 23rd. Tours will run from 6:00pm-10:00pm. Admission is $3 for students/seniors and $5 for adults. We look forward to seeing and entertaining you one (or both) of the nights!

Some terrific examples of faculty led initiatives using technology for improved student learning:

One of our English Language Learners will be using an iPod to assist in classroom and homework translation. Faculty and staff will help make this connection possible.

Mrs. Ransom’s and Mrs. Potvin’s classes have been collaborating (and competing) on an interactive classroom makeover contest. Using FlipCameras, iPod Touches, Netbooks and the internet site Audacity for recording and editing, they are designing a terrific project presentation for a $30,000 contest. More information (including an opportunity to view the finished video) will be coming soon.

Mrs. Doran’s Honors English 10 and English 10 classes will be showing their photostory movies to their peers on Monday during class. They have taken a piece (a poem or a personal story) and created their own movies, with pictures, animation, and sound. They will also take home their published anthology of student work next week as well. Mrs. Doran and I can’t wait to see the results!

Ms. Decarolis and Ms. Kiefer would like to thank John Desabrais, Shawna Lamb, Jade Mullins, Katelyn Phillips, Dan Schulte, Andy Salamin, and Jake Vandenburg for their participation in a student focus group for the Learning Annex. They are appreciative that these folks gave some time to the development of this program. Their insight was extremely valuable and will be crucial as this program continues to move forward.

Mr. Connelly’s students created a “Take the Who’s Desk Is It Quiz?” Last Wednesday 10/07 (before school and during period 3 in the main lobby) students and staff were welcome to take the building-wide quiz in which you challenge your powers of observation by matching a teacher or staff member’s room or desk with an item located prominently in the room. It was challenging and fun. The quiz was taken both online or in person. Prizes were awarded for a passing score of 75%.

2007 FHUHS graduate Morgan Denehy presented in several classes last Friday on studying abroad in Morocco. He also showed a slide show, approximately 90 photos, in the library at 3:15 for teachers interested. Thanks to Mrs. Kuehn for arranging this valuable opportunity and Mr. Luzer for seeing the logistics realized.

Congratulations to senior Sarah Alexander for being voted the FHUHS Pumpkin Princess by her peers. We look forward to seeing her lead our band in the 50th Rutland Halloween Parade on October 31st.

Have a great week,
Brett C. Blanchard,
Fair Haven Union High School Principal
