FAIR HAVEN UNION HIGH SCHOOL Principal’s Newsletter – November 16, 2009
The past week saw two of our most important assemblies. On Tuesday the 10th, the American Legion Post 49 Color Guard honored our traditional Veteran’s Day Assembly with their presence. Along with rousing marching music played by the FHUHS Band, Mr. Bill Canfield spoke about the importance of the holiday. It was my pleasure to also say a few words. The dignified gathering to support and show respect for those serving presently and in the past was concluded with the playing of Taps.
The other assembly held Monday the 16th honored our students who have displayed academic excellence last spring as well as this fall. The Academic Awards Ceremony included the Students of the Marking Period, as chosen by the FHUHS faculty and staff. Students of the Marking Period were:
Abigail Rampone – Social Studies
Robert Coloutti – Foreign Language
Seth Welch – Learning Annex
Amanda Green – Industrial Arts
Kale Auger – English
Christian Doran – Music
Amanda Tucker – Science
Poppy Immel – Art
Sarah Miller – Business
Kevin Hurd – Physical Education
Brooke Ryan – Work Study/Career
Joshua Cormier – Math
Emily Ringquist – Computer Apps
Tyler Forkey – Driver Education
Steven Schnabel – Living Skills
Marlayna Rheaume – Academic Support
Seth Welch – Family & Consumer Studies
Our Keynotes will be performing a choral music concert at Rutland Nursing Home on Tuesday, November 24th. The students involved are: Jimmy Britt, Maria Burt, Kendra Densmore, Christian Doran, Jody Fabian, Shane Galvin, Meghan Hill, Sam Hoenes, Brandy Johnson, Grace Kuehne, Sarah LaFleche, Brittany Pierce, Gwynneth Roberts, Jon Russell, Sydni Shaddock and Emily Turgeon, with Jeff Bruce on percussion.
Some of our students have been working on the Constitution, laws, and how laws are developed and enforced. They have picked a topic of interest to them that they would like to see addressed at the local level. A letter was written to Serena Williams, Town Manager and hand-delivered. She has volunteered herself and Chief Humphries to discuss the issue – Loitering in the Free Parking Area..
The following students will be attending the Northeast Music Festival in Lake Placid November 19th-22nd: Christian Doran, Cassie Papandrea, Jennifer Genier, Shania Brown, Grace Kuehne and Michael Wayne. Good luck in your performance.
Mothers Without Borders Vermont is a local organization connected to a larger group responding to the global orphan crisis. Each year they provide close to 20 tons of relief supplies to widows, orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia. Last year the Vermont group made and sent almost one thousand t-shirt dresses for children to Zambia. On Monday, November 9th, the two Fashion Design Classes here at the high school made 13 t-shirt dresses using donated materials. These dresses are on display in the lobby of the high school.
Thanks to a generous donation from the New England Dairy Promotion Board, the milk machine in the cafeteria will soon be repaired. We appreciate their generosity in helping us with this unplanned expense.
Project Graduation will be holding a basket raffle on Sunday, November 29th, from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the high school.
Sophomore Kaylie-Ann Flannigan flew over the school campus last weekend and took some amazing photos of our campus. I will be using the photos during my next Building and Grounds Committee, as the clarity of the digital prints was excellent.

Have a great week!

Fair Haven Union High School Principal
