Fair Haven Union High School is proud to announce that junior Garry Brown was the runner-up in this year’s regional UVM Math Competition. Garry’s second place finish means he has been selected by the Vermont State Math Coalition to join the Vermont All Stars in representing the state of Vermont in a math competition at Penn State on June 5th. Garry along with his FHUHS math instructor Ms. Kathy Gallagher, went last week to be honored during UVM Math Day. Fair Haven Union High School is proud to be the only high school with both the winner of the UVM Writing Competition (senior Alyssa Dempsey) and the runner up in this year’s math competition. Congratulations to Garry and Alyssa.

On May 13-14 several individuals from Fair Haven Union High School attended a technology conference called Dynamic Landscapes at Champlain College in Burlington, VT. This conference had several workshops and keynote speakers that seek to assist teachers and districts in implementing meaningful technology integration to enhance student learning. This year Clarena Renfrow, Technology Integration Coach, presented at two workshops for Dynamic Landscapes.

Fair Haven Union High School’s Advanced Placement English students had the opportunity on May 12th to interview a Sudanese Refugee (often referred to as one of the “Lost Boys”) via LNV technology. This interactive network, the CILC website, and the helpful coordination of Mrs. Burlette and Eric Snay made this virtual field trip a success. Without leaving school grounds, students were able and listen to the program titled “Conflict in Africa” and participate in the discussion by asking questions. The following student responses share their insights concerning the program:

“His story was very eye-opening. It was good to hear of all of these events from someone who had actually experienced them instead of reading about them in an article or something. . .” (Joe Taggart)

“The speaker’s conflicts and experiences are frightening and mostly unbelievable to the typical American.” (Mitchell Dundon)

“I felt Michael’s life story was very inspirational. He overcame many obstacles and was very devoted to his education. Growing up without parents seemed like it would be very hard to do. I also learned that some people value education a lot more than others. Americans seem to take their education for granted . . .” (Shane Galvin)

“Despite having experienced enough adversity for multiple lifetimes, he seemed genuinely optimistic. He even described himself as lucky on multiple occasions . . . . His optimistic and humorous demeanor definitely stood out to me . . . [His] story was tragic but also inspiring.” (Morgan Childs)

The best laid plans go awry when the cast and crew of a Broadway-bound play resort to manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandon to get what they want. Join the Break-a-Leg Society as they present the full-length comedy “Don’t Talk To The Actors” by Tom Dudzick on Friday – May 21 @ 7 p.m. / Saturday – May 22 @ 7 p.m. / Sunday – May 23 @ 2 p.m. Tickets are $3 for Students / Seniors and $5 for Adults (Note: This play contains some mild adult content & humor.)

The senior prom was held this past week-end. Congratulations to John Pellerin and Cassy Murphy for being selected King and Queen. The members of the court included: Sarah Alexander, Alyssa Dempsey, Megan Irons, Adam Cecil, Steven Pittello and Jackson Richards.

Have a great week!

Brett C. Blanchard,
Fair Haven Union High School Principal
