Conjugation of Regular -er & -ir verbs in the preterite
Conjugation of regular -er & -ir verbs in the preterite indicative
Regular -er and -ir verbs have identical suffixes in the preterite indicative. Here are the regular endings:
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| First Person | -í | -imos |
| Second Person | -iste | -isteis |
| Third Person | -ió | -ieron |
Thus:
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| First Person | comí – viví | comimos – vivimos |
| Second Person | comiste – viviste | comisteis – vivisteis |
| Third Person | comío – vivió | comieron – vivieron |
It is interesting to note that the preterite indicative is the only tense/mode in which the tú form does not end in an s. In all of the other tenses in Spanish, the tú form always end in an s.
