   fustazos no está en ningún diccionario que tengo y no la reconozco… Mañana pediré a mi mujer si la concoce

   OK, some more research. I hadn’t yet consulted with the María Moliner dictionary (an etymological dictionary). Fustazo comes from fusta. A fusta is a switch, or crop (ie., a riding crop) used to swat horses generally, but the switch was the castigating tool of choice for children in the late 1800s and later on as well in rural areas.

   fustazo does not appear in the current Diccionario de la Real Academía de Español but fusta does. Given its etymology, a fustazo would be a hard swat of a crop or switch–the augmentative suffix -azo implies ‘big’, ‘major’, or ‘maximum’.

   SO…in the El País article Sarkozy critica a Chirac por restar importancia al fracaso en las europeas

   Atacado por la izquierda y criticado por los centristas, el presidente francés, Jacques Chirac, recibió ayer una crítica en sus propias filas. El ministro de Economía, Nicolas Sarkozy, censuró la falta de reacción del Ejecutivo al voto de castigo recibido por el partido gubernamental Unión por un Movimiento Popular (UMP) en las elecciones europeas del domingo, el segundo fustazo recibido de los votantes tras el sufrido en las regionales de marzo.

   would mean that Sarkozy’s criticism of the Chirac government’s failure to react to the vote of no confidence was itself the second “slap” (the first being the vote of no confidence itself…)

   Ummmm, gracias. But the word was in El Mundo, and it was the title of one section of the paper. So It still doesn’t really make sense….but now I know how to say riding crop!

   En http://www.elmundo.com/ , a la izquierda de la pantalla, hay unas secciones, y abajo “Semanales”, la tercera sub-seccion es “Fustazos”.

   ¡Ahora entiendo! ¡Esa sección de El Mundo tiene que ver con las carreras de caballos! Por ejemplo, en las noticias de hoy, “Hacker” es el nombre de un caballo de Chile que está corriendo en carreras en España.
