Future and Conditional Irregular Verbs

Posted inSpanish Grammar | Updated: 7:04 pm, Mar 19, 2008 by Mr. Herren

The Future and Conditional Indicative tenses share the same stems in the formation of the irregular forms.

There are some patterns in the irregularity of the stems. The following are lists of common verbs which are irregular in the stem in both the future and conditional indicative, arranged by the nature of their irregularity:

er verbs which drop the ‘e’ of the infinitive

Infinitive Stem Future yo form Conditional yo form
caber cabr- cabré cabría
haber habr- habré habría
poder podr- podré podría
querer querr- querré querría
saber sabr- sabré sabría

Verbs which substitute a ‘d’ for the ‘e’ or ‘i’ of the infinitive

Infinitive Stem Future yo form Conditional yo form
poner pondr- pondré pondría
salir saldr- saldré saldría
tener tendr- tendré tendría
valer valdr- valdré valdría
venir vendr- vendré vendría

Suppletive Forms

(no pattern to their irregularity–but you can think of them as deleting the ‘c’ and the ‘e’ from the infinitive, even though the ‘c’ and the ‘e’ are in different positions in each verb)

Infinitive Stem Future yo form Conditional yo form
decir dir- diré diría
hacer har- haré haría
