Why learn Spanish? More than 20 million U.S. residents use Spanish as their primary language. Worldwide, more than 400 million people speak Spanish, making it the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. In the very near future you will embark upon careers, perhaps traveling internationally and living in new communities. Our goal in this course is to learn to communicate in Spanish so that you are better prepared to interact with your future community members, business associates, and political leaders.

Throughout each unit in Spanish 1, students can expect to engage in activities that support the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning. The 5 “C’s” are:

  1. Communication: Our curriculum focuses on the use of Spanish for both interpersonal and one-way communication in everyday situations. Students will be asked to communicate in oral and written form, interpret oral and written messages, show cultural understanding when they communicate, and present oral and written information to audiences of listeners and readers for a variety of purposes.
  2. Cultures: Cultural understanding is a key component of language learning. Our curriculum is designed to help students become better able to understand other people’s points of view, ways of life, and contributions to the world. Students will also develop a better understanding and appreciation of the relationship between languages and other cultures.
  3. Connections: Content from other subject areas will be integrated with the Spanish language instruction through lessons that have common themes.
  4. Comparisons: Students will be encouraged to compare and contrast languages and cultures. They will discover patterns, make predictions, and analyze similarities and differences across languages and cultures. Students will come to understand their native language and culture better through such comparisons.
  5. Communities: Students will be provided with opportunities to extend their learning experiences beyond the classroom and into their homes and larger community.

  • #2 pencils and/or blue or black ink pen. Assignments submitted in red or green ink and will receive a zero.

Assignments:

All assignments, whether written or oral, will count towards your grade in this course. Assignments will not be accepted late without prior permission and will receive a zero. (Exceptions will be made for absences due to illness.)

Grading ( in addition to Midterm and Final Exams):

I will use a variety of assessment tools to determine the extent to which you have achieved the targeted goals, objectives, and standards of the course. Each student will be evaluated in the following categories:

  • Class, Culture & Oral Participation 25%
  • Assignments 25%
  • Quizzes 25%
  • Tests & Projects 25%

Plagiarism and Online Translations:

Any student involved in copying from a research source or copying/loaning answers and papers to other students will receive a zero on the corresponding assignment.
