WEBSITE CHANGE FOR SEASONAL SCHEDULES As some of you may have noticed, we have changed how we present our seasonal schedules on our web page. The MVL, as well as most schools throughout Vermont, have gone to a program called LeagueMinder, which allows us to have better control over the schedules, and what appears on them. Most importantly, it allows us to make changes instantly when cancellations or postponements occur. For the public, you can easily access any schedule you wish by going to www.viewmyschedule.com . An added bonus is that you can sign up to be notified of any changes via email, which will instantly inform you of any adjustments to the schedules. This site is for GAMES ONLY. Practice schedules will still be done as they have in the past. We are still working out some of the details, so there may be a glitch here or there as we familiarize ourselves with the program. But, the hope is this will make things easier for everyone down the road. Thank you for your patience.

SLATER GREAT GOES INTO THE VPA HALL OF FAME We are extremely honored to announce that Mr. Bill Ryan, Class of 1959, has been inducted into the Vermont Principals’ Association Hall of Fame, Class of 2008. Considered one of the most dominate pitchers in Vermont during his high school career at Fair Haven, Bill Ryan set the bar for athletic excellence at our school. A graduate of the class of 1959, he was a 3 sport star, competing in football, basketball and baseball. He led his Slater teams to state championships in each sport, but it was baseball where he made his name. His career numbers are staggering: Career Record-28 wins/0 losses, 6 No Hitters/12 one hitters, Struck out 20 batters in game vs Middlebury (1958). During 1959 season struck out 96 of 133 batters faced, and only allowed 3 hits the entire season. His teams won the football state championship in 1956, basketball state championship in 1957, and baseball state championships in 1957 & 1958. Bill never rested on his laurels, and continued to make a name for himself well past high school. He matriculated at the University of Notre Dame, where he played baseball before being drafted as a “Bonus Baby” in 1960 by the Milwaukee Braves. During Spring Training of 1962, he struck out Roger Maris three times in a game, but gave up a home run to Mickey Mantle, which some say, to this day, has never come down! He played three years with the Braves organization, and was to be in their rotation for the ’62 season, but never pitched in the major leagues due to a shoulder injury that spring, which ended his baseball career.
From here, he began a 30 year career with the Washington Post in their Broadcast and Cable division, becoming its President and CEO, while overseeing 27 television stations. In 1987, following a tragic spinal cord accident which paralyzed his son, he teamed with NFL Hall of Famer, Nick Buoniconti and some of the best spinal cord specialists in the world to form the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Bill is also an accomplished big game hunter, having had success all over North America and New Zealand. He has harvested the Grand Slam of Sheep, as well as three mule deer scoring over 200 Boone & Crockett points, and held the world record for New Zealand Red Stag Deer. Most importantly, Bill has never forgotten his roots, or those that helped him to achieve his early successes. He remains close to many of his high school teammates, or “The Legacy” as they are referred to in Fair Haven. Although he resides in North Carolina most of the year, he spends much of the summer at his other home in Castleton, Vermont. He is considered one of the premiere athletes in the proud history of Fair Haven athletics, and now joins Tom & Fran LaPlaca (Class of 2007) as Fair Haven’s representatives to the VPA Hall of Fame.

All participants are reminded that a signed permission form and a current physical must be on file at FHUHS in order to practice.

We will continue to post updates on the web as soon as they become official. Please contact Eric Ramey at eramey@fhuhs.org with any questions.***
